Strategy towards Nutrition Security

September 2012 - In the Philippines, rice is the most important staple almost everyday. But based on research, regular milled rice is not enough to battle malnutrition. Rice is low in micro nutrients and basically serves only as a source of carbohydrates.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) have long been pushing the rice fortification development with the help of Department of Science and Technology (DOST). The two departments is on a mission to produce more varieties of rice that are rich in micro nutrients to help combat the increasing cases of malnutrition.

During the fora held at the DOST Region 11 Office at Davao City local officials from the department and National Food Authority (NFA) tackled that the scaling up of the fortification of rice program will contribute to increase the opportunity to improve nutrition. Officials sees this as a strategy towards food and nutrition security since there is an evidence that hunger and malnutrition is increasing among children and lactating mothers.
